IOM Brussels – A Mission with Regional Functions

 

The IOM office in Brussels is one of 19 offices worldwide that is designated as a Mission with Regional Functions (MRFs). As resource and support center for IOM Country and Special Purpose Missions, IOM Brussels provides other IOM offices with operational and administrative expertise to assist with project development and implementation.

Given the ever-increasing political, geographic and economic weight of the EU, the role of IOM Brussels in acting as a liaison to the EU institutions is of great importance to IOM and to the effective management of migration in Europe and abroad. The policies and projects implemented by IOM Brussels are especially significant, in light of the recent developments in EU migration policy that indicate that migration is no longer solely a matter for national sovereignty or intergovernmental consultation.

New approaches to migration call for an increased level of coordination between all IOM field missions and MRFs in Europe and for IOM Brussels to play a coordinating and advisory role for EU-related issues. IOM Brussels is grateful for the years of support and good cooperation with the EU Member States, the European Commission, and the Belgian Government.
